Chapter 43

Friday 10th September

I spent the first part of the evening packing for my holiday, which I intended as a sort of retreat: a quiet time and space away from the madness of a world that seemed intent on making my life miserable. Perhaps Heacham had been right; perhaps I was wicked and was being punished for my rejection of his teachings. In my current turmoil, I couldn’t make up my mind on that or anything else.
A crofter’s cottage, on the edge of the ocean, seemed ideal. No telephone, no electricity, no television or radio. The nearest shop was the village post office stores, seven miles along a single-track road. It would be perfect.
Except that I had Dad’s dying wish; his gentle injunction to mate with more than one man before taking Leigh as my lifetime’s partner. It wasn’t a prospect I welcomed but it was Dad’s final request of me and therefore something I must do; something I felt compelled to do. The sooner I achieved it, the sooner I’d be free of that obligation and able to contemplate the life I still hoped might become mine.
Once I’d collected and packed all I needed to take with me, I found I still couldn’t settle. I wasn’t hungry and the prospect of dinner with Leigh and Netta looking at me, anxious and confused, wasn’t inviting.
I showered and returned to my room. The window was wide open and I let the air flow over my skin as I rested my elbows on the windowsill. The carved wren perched on its impossibly delicate legs on the log between my arms, its tiny pointed bill threatening to peck my breast. I picked it up and examined it. Old Hodge’s present meant the world to me. It represented real, unambiguous love and something solid and unchanging in a world that was in turmoil for me. There was within that small gift, so much care in a symbol of a natural world free of the complications human relationships seemed always to involve. I replaced it and continued my reverie at the window.
The wind changed and the air, although not cool, lost some of the heat it had borne for days.
My mind was full of all that had befallen me since I’d come to Longhouse. I was bursting with confusion and emotions I couldn’t identify, let alone express. I felt as though I must explode with anger, despair, frustration, desire, disgust and sheer perplexity if something didn’t release me soon.
I reviewed those things I could identify as changes, sources of anxiety or confusion, in the hope I might bring order to my chaotic world. But I found no consolation in the exercise. In fact, it seemed to intensify my negative feelings.
To add to my anxieties, now had come the news that Heacham’s trial was due and would prevent my holiday should I allow it.
I hadn’t been able to book my holiday through the travel agent where Leigh had bought my vouchers. Instead, I’d found private holiday accommodation, advertised in the Dalesman magazine. With a bit of gentle persuasion I might have exchanged the vouchers for money but that would have invited questions and, in any case, I might use those vouchers later to take Leigh with me on a holiday; somewhere warm, exotic and romantic.
So, I’d contacted the owner of the croft by phone, explained my situation and gained her agreement to accept cash on arrival. We would meet at the village and go to the croft together. She’d given me detailed instructions how to find the village, even explaining where to get the ferry for the crossing to the island and estimating my journey time so we could agree on a time for our meeting.
I must get away and be completely out of contact. This was an ideal way of ensuring my isolation and continued privacy whilst away. But I dreaded the arrival of a summons to appear at Heacham’s trial, knowing I couldn’t ignore such a legal requirement. I decided not to open the post in the morning and to ensure no one else could before I left for Scotland.
None of this helped relieve my internal pressure and turmoil. I still felt tight as a bowstring, felt something must trigger my release or I would snap and be utterly destroyed.
Thunder rumbled over the dark fells and I realized that night had fallen as I stood in contemplation. With the thunder came rain and, for one insane moment, I wanted to dash into the garden and let the torrent wash me clean of doubts and confusion. Lightening split the darkness, blinding me for a moment and moving me at last.
My back ached; my limbs were tense and stiff from my fixed position. I straightened up and stretched, swung my arms to bring life back into my hands and relieve the numbness in my elbows. As I brought my arms around in a full circle toward my body, my hand caught something hard and knocked it off the sill. It fell at my feet.
I crouched and, in the glow that entered through my partly open door from the landing, I saw I’d knocked Old Hodge’s birthday gift onto the floor. The wren had snapped from the log and lay as if dead beside it.
I felt rather than heard the cry of utter desolation that developed from breaking that symbol of love. The barrier to grief, to pent-up rage and disappointment, to unexpressed anxiety and confusion, to unrequited love was breached by that one cry. I fell to the floor and wept; sobbed my heart out and began, at last, to wash away my guilt and rage and grief.
Leigh came early in the cleansing process. I felt his warmth about me, his arms holding me, his hands using tissues to dab my eyes and nose. I heard his soft voice, full of concern, saying words with no meaning but comfort. And slowly I came through the first layer of my pain.
Exhausted, yet refreshed, I let him take me from the floor and lay me on my bed, his skin warm and gentle against mine.
‘Sleep now, Faith. Sleep and forget.’
I felt him move away as if he meant to leave. ‘Don’t go. I want you. I want you here.’ And he lay beside me on the bed, his body close to mine, his arms about me. He held me in a close embrace and made no sexual advance in spite of our nakedness.
The storm raged through the night about us but we were warm together, protected from its violence.
I felt safe in his arms. He was kind and gentle, holding me and stroking me for comfort, enclosing me within his soft embrace.
I wanted him to join with me. I wanted it and it was right. ‘I want you, Leigh. Please.’
I rolled to face him and he kissed my mouth, gently, for a long time our lips met and knew where they should go. When he moved away I wanted him to stay and kissed his mouth again. He guided me then, with his lips and tongue, showed me where the pleasure was, how to give and to receive. I learned quickly, desire uncovering what my body knew by instinct.
I stroked a hand along his back and felt him do the same, felt the feather touch of his palm and fingers on my willing skin. He kissed my face, my neck, my shoulders and I found my mouth seeking his skin to kiss in turn. We moved and he stroked one hand from my shoulder down the front of me across the space between my breasts and down my abdomen as far as the short hair that marked the space I wanted him to fill. He stroked on down and I moved my legs to give him access. He caressed the insides of my thighs in turn, brushing his fingers so softly against the lips of my divide that it was barely a touch at all, yet it brought such pleasure that it had me rising up to meet him. I stroked his back with one hand as the other sought new places to explore. I found his manhood. As my fingers touched and stroked and held him, he hardened and grew rigid and I knew that this part of him would enter me and penetrate my very centre.
His mouth moved to my lips and we kissed and tongued and mouthed each other in a passion that was in danger of overwhelming me. I knew I wanted him inside me and we were ready. He moved to kiss my breasts and took each nipple in between his lips in turn, sucking gently, tonguing the tips so my body arched in answer and I felt a new sensation deep inside me.
I took his manhood in my hand and guided it toward my moist divide. He led my hand from there and placed it on the firm curve of his bottom as he slowly found my entrance and explored me, the very tip discovering the magic nodule and touching it with such sweet softness that I gasped with the delight of it, my body filling with sensations of excitement and arousal.
He lingered there, caressing that one place with gentle strokes that sent ripples through my body, making every portion of my skin aware of touch and feeling, so that his lips on mine were sweet and warm and moist with love, his hands traced exquisite joy around my shoulder and my side. He moved the stroking hand along my body, caressing the curve of my breast, making my nipple rise to firmness as his fingertips encircled it, then whispering down my abdomen and gentling my hip as he slipped the palm beneath my rising buttock.
I held my breath as he drew the tip of his manhood along the length of my divide and found the willing, wanting opening. He put his lips over my mouth and tongued my tongue with his, nudging his way into my mouth as he entered my very centre. There was one brief instant of sharp pain and I was woman.
I encouraged him toward me with my hands cupping his buttocks and he thrust on past the fragile barrier and stroked into me until all was pleasure. I let him guide and show me. He kissed my mouth, my eyes, my cheeks, my ears. One hand played in my hair as his other taught me how to rise and fall with him, matching his slow movement so the base of his hard manhood touched against my magic spot and caused the growing sense of wonder to pervade my entire body. I was alive in every cell of being, every touch was pure delight, my hands discovered his delicious body, stroked his back, his arms, his beautiful firm bottom as he rose and fell above me. I spread my thighs a little wider to heighten the touch of him on my most sensitive part. He responded, moving higher up my body and gentling my bottom with the hand beneath. We moved together, rising, falling, breathing the same air and oblivious to everything that was not the single being we had formed.
The pleasure filling me grew and grew as he moved within me. It built in waves of pure enjoyment until my body pulsed with wonder and I cried aloud in joy. He let that climax take its course and moved within me, matching my pulsating pleasure as it slowly faded. Then he moved more deeply within me, thrusting his whole length of manhood deep inside me, in and out, the tip almost leaving me but returning to my depths as he plunged into my centre and touched again that heightened point of pure sensation. I held him to me, my hands moving with his body as he thrust inside me, feeling pleasure building once again, raising my hips to meet his thrusting, plunging delicious movement. He took the hand from my shoulder, drew it down my side and slipped it underneath my bottom with the other so he held me to him. Still he moved within me powerful and strong with desire and love.
I felt another wave of climax breaking over me and ecstasy discovered me as we became one with wave following resounding wave through my body from my centre to the very tips of all my being. I felt his force burst deep within me, felt the throb of his life, his being, merging with my own and we both cried out in wonder and delight as amazement surged and we became a single joyous unity of love and pleasure and delicious exultation.
Slowly we descended from that high, that other plane of being, into a soft gentle world of self-awareness. I had never felt so whole, so utterly complete, so wondrously at one with me. He stayed within me, gently moved his hands to take his weight onto his elbows, stroked my head and neck and shoulders with his fingers.
We kissed, softly, slowly, lingering as we caught our breath. My hands caressed his back, his head, his ears, his arms. We gazed at one another in the dim light from the open door.
The storm returned to us and we knew then it had raged and thundered as we loved, had rained as it still did, had strobed our glowing bodies with its lightening flashes as we moved.
I felt the gentle echo of the climax as my centre clasped the relaxing stem of him inside me in a soft rhythmic reminder of the waves of passion that had ruled me.
There were no words to say what I felt. I could say just one phrase to describe it. ‘I love you, Leigh’
He nodded in the dim light and I saw his eyes were full of wonder. ‘I promised I would never say these words unless I meant them. I love you, Faith. I love you absolutely and without conditions.’
It was enough for us just then. Practicality dictated we must part but reluctance to accept that made us stay together until moisture from our love began to leak from me and I gently urged him move and give me tissues. I smiled, recalling the garden scene with Netta, knowing now what she’d felt as I had teased her. Even her intrusion to my thoughts didn’t diminish my delight.
Leigh lay beside me, one arm round my shoulders as I lay my head upon his slowly moving chest. ‘Did it hurt?’
‘Very briefly, very little. You made me woman tonight. The pleasure was amazing. I feel wonderful. I love you.’
‘I love you, Faith.’
We spoke no more; satiation stealing passion from us so we slept.

Chapter 33

Saturday 10th July

‘Christ, I’m sorry, Faith. You’re soaked to the skin!’
‘That’s right, Leigh, to the skin. See, my blouse is transparent? Almost as if I’m naked. You can see my breasts and my nipples. Isn’t that nice?’
I deliberately looked her in the eye, determined to resist the temptation her heavy irony amplified. ‘I know. I should’ve been here and waiting for you, but…
‘Oh, it’s not important. You and Netta had extra time for sex, so it doesn’t matter.’
‘I really am sorry.’
‘No, please don’t upset yourself. If Netta wants sex, well that’s infinitely more important than getting here on time to meet boring Faith from her first ever stay away from home, especially when she was so looking forward to seeing you. I do understand.’
She was angry and hurt and I had no excuse. It irked me that she was right about the reason as well. ‘I said I was sorry.’
‘Oh, well, that’s all right then, if you’re sorry. That’ll dry my clothes and my skin and make up for my embarrassment at walking half naked down the station. That’ll even make up for my disappointment when I was full of the anticipation of seeing you waiting for me. Everything’s fine if you’re sorry.’
I made a determined effort not to look at her lovely breasts pushing against the transparent fabric and looked instead into her eyes that were full of justifiable anger and hurt. ‘Shit! I deserved that.’
‘Of course, if my breasts aren’t worth looking at, I might as well fold my arms over them.’
‘Don’t you dare!’ I looked, long and hard and they were lovely. ‘You’re very beautiful, Faith. You have a lovely body. Let me get you home, dry and warm again and I’ll put the kettle on and make you a nice hot cuppa. So, did you pass?’
She looked at me as though there was another diatribe waiting to explode from her, and then, as if all the rest had been an act, she burst out laughing. ‘I passed, I passed, I passed!’
‘Brilliant! I knew you would, of course. Brilliant! Well done, Faith!’ I pulled over and stopped the car, leant across and kissed her mouth and hugged her as close as the seats allowed. She was wet and chill, the cold rain firming her nipples as if in the height of arousal. I longed to cup those gorgeous breasts but I wasn’t sure she was ready for that. I made do with another look at her, this time at leisure. She made no effort to hide and there was no condemnation in her eyes. ‘You’re a marvel. I’m so pleased and proud of you. Your dad’ll be over the moon.’
‘How is he?’
‘Haven’t you phoned?’
‘Only to let him know I arrived safely. He’s all right, isn’t he?’
‘As well as when you left, yes. God, I’m glad to see you, Faith. Bugger me if I haven’t missed you.’
‘A lovely sentiment oddly expressed. I wouldn’t perform that particular service, even if I were equipped to, but I think I’m flattered.’
‘You’ve learned something.’
She smiled with all the enigmatic force of a sphinx. ‘I suppose I might have, yes.’ But she would say no more; I was being punished for my late arrival.
Netta raised her eyebrows at her exposure but hugged her in spite of the wetness and welcomed her home. ‘Well done, Fay. I knew you’d do it.’
‘How did you know I’d passed?’
‘Failures don’t usually grin so wide that their faces are in danger of falling into two halves.’
‘Come upstairs with me, Netta, I want to ask you a few questions whilst I get dry and changed.’
‘I think Leigh was rather hoping you’d stay down here wet, Faith.’
‘Oh, I think Leigh’s had more reward than he deserves in the circumstances, don’t you?’
I went to fulfil my promise of a cup of tea for Faith as they went upstairs. How alike and how different they were; sisters who might’ve been strangers. I knew a time was approaching when I would have to choose between them, and Netta’s charms and experience no longer made her the obvious choice. There were things in Faith that spoke to me, touched my soul. I found her invading my thoughts with increasing frequency. That she was now as physically appealing as any woman I’d known, made her all the more attractive.
She drove herself to see her dad on Sunday, in my car, of course. It left me free to continue the undivided attention I’d been able to lavish on Netta during her absence and gave me a weekend without the irritation and anxiety of Netta storming off in a huff of pique or jealousy.
The car drew up around teatime and I waited for her to bring me the latest on her dad. As soon as she entered the room, I knew something was wrong. Her hand covered her mouth and her face bore signs of real anxiety. ‘Leigh. I don’t know how to ... I… I’m ever so sorry, but I …’
‘She’s smashed your car up!’ Netta’s conclusion was so triumphant, I thought she must have somehow seen the damage. I wondered what the repairs were going to cost.
‘You’re not hurt…?’
Faith grinned, impishly. ‘I forgot to put any petrol in and the gauge is just above empty. Sorry.’ She stuck out her tongue at Netta and laughed at us.
I had to join her. It was the first time she’d ever played such a trick and it marked another major change in her.
Netta, however, wasn’t amused. ‘Bitch!’
The following day was her eighteenth birthday. I couldn’t accept she was so young. She behaved in so many ways like a mature woman and looked the part, though her tantrums and sulks were much more symptomatic of her real age.
I had the day off for her. Ma, reluctantly, catered for a party. Netta didn’t to want the guests from my party to attend hers.
‘Too many women.’
Matilda brought some of their mutual men friends who seemed uncomfortable in the house until drink settled them.
As was to be expected, the night was Netta’s.
To Netta’s amazement and mine, Faith had bought her the most extraordinary dress whilst she’d been away. The fabric was sheer black gauze that, on its own, would have left nothing to the imagination. A wide gold lame snake looked over one shoulder with red eyes of sparkling sequins, its forked red tongue licking at the nipple beneath. It draped across that sleeveless shoulder around her back and then spiralled her body, crossing her other breast and then her mound of Venus to end in a tail of red and black beads on one leg. The hem echoed the diagonal of the twisting snake so that it hung to her knee where the tail fell but rode just under her hip at the other side. Faith had bought a skimpy gold bra and thong to go underneath as well as a pair of gold stiletto sandals. Netta was entranced by the gift and wore it for the party, with the sandals, but without the underwear. She looked sensational.
Inevitably, she talked the other men and I into a photo session along the lines of that held on my birthday, with similar group photographs but with herself as the only woman, of course, amongst the men.
Before the evening was over, she’d removed her dress publicly, dancing to Dion singing The Wanderer and privately, when she vanished for portions of the night with different young men.
I made up for her temporary desertion by spending a pleasant interlude with Matilda.
Faith remained her usual chaste self during all of this, though her previous moral superiority seemed to have given way to a careful curiosity.
I watched my protégée that night and wondered what she’d learned during her week away. I was convinced she remained virgin, yet the lesson had been sexual; her demeanour was so markedly different regarding sex. It was as if she’d discovered some of its delights without being in any way marked by it.
Faith dressed that night in a white cotton dress, sleeveless, with a wide scoop neck that revealed as much as it concealed of her breasts. Gathered at the waist, the skirt fell in soft rounded pleats to mid thigh. Simple white sandals displayed her small feet and she looked altogether lovely. The men certainly found it impossible to keep their eyes off her even with Netta cavorting naked amongst them.
There was a slightly sour interlude mid evening when one of the young men lit up in the sitting room and refused Faith’s firm but polite request to stub it out or to go outside. Fortunately, I was close at the time and gave him the choice of putting it out or leaving.
When the early hours took me to bed, I found Netta beside me, eager for my body. I let her have her way and she reached a climax so rapidly I knew she’d been primed by another man unable to take her all the way.
‘You’re still the best I’ve ever had, Leigh.’
I kissed her breasts and drew her head toward me so I could reach her lips. She resisted for a moment.
‘That’s why I did it, you know. I wanted to be absolutely certain I hadn’t made a mistake. Tonight told me how right I am to stay with you.’ Satiated and exhausted, she relaxed and slumped exactly where she was.
I gently lifted her away and lay her to sleep. It was a while before I was relaxed enough to join her, but it was her birthday, after all. Her words disturbed me with their promise of a permanence I neither sought nor desired.
As sleep at last crept over me, I was aware of Faith making her way softly up the stairs and I wondered where she’d been and what she’d been doing until now.

But, if you missed the start, here's the link to it: http://stuartaken.blogspot.com/2012/01/read-free-my-novel-here.html

Chapter 1 appeared on 13 January and following chapters appear each Friday. You can find them via the archive.

Chapter 11

I was not afraid of contact with others; I simply had not experienced it. Amongst men, only Father, Furnswurth and Leigh had touched me. Furnswurth’s slimy touch had repulsed me. Father habitually slapped whatever uncovered part of me was within easy reach or pressed his hand on the skin of my back as he beat me with his belt. When Leigh held my elbow to guide me into the shop, I simply felt wanted.
Leigh was eager to be out of the typewriter shop and would have chosen the first machine we saw: I had to use it. From my days at the Dairy, I knew there were many to choose from and I wanted one that would do the job efficiently and without bother. He allowed me time to test and I selected an electronic machine with a choice of daisy wheels and a correction facility. Leigh handed over a shiny plastic card; no money changed hands so I wondered at the transaction.
‘What’s that?’
‘Credit card.’
‘Have you given them money with that?’
He explained.
‘I see.’ I did not see at all, but there was more than I could learn in a few seconds and Leigh wanted us out of the shop.
‘Are we going back now?’
‘To the car.’
‘Oh.’
‘You sound disappointed.’
‘I thought we were going to …’
‘We are. I just don’t want to lug this round all day. We’ll drop it in the boot and then find a fashion boutique.’
‘What’s that?’
‘A shop that sells clothes; usually women’s clothes. Don’t mind the walk, do you?’
‘Mind? I’d walk all day for some new clothes, Leigh. When you talked of presents, I never thought you meant clothes.’
‘I thought you weren’t interested. I’m being a bit selfish, really. Want to see you in something better than … better than that stuff.’
‘You surely didn’t think I wear these from choice?’
‘What was I supposed to think?’
‘I have no spending money. Father gets all my clothes for me, from jumble sales.’
‘All?’
‘Yes. Including my underwear, if you must know.’
That single piece of information galvanized Leigh. He hurried me to the car and stashed the typewriter away.
‘Right. First port of call is Marks and Sparks, where every modern miss buys her knickers. Let’s start at the bottom, if you’ll excuse the pun, and work upwards and outwards.’ He was all eagerness and my own excitement fed off his so that we acted like boisterous children.
‘Come on.’ He clasped my hand and it felt good. We ran from the car park together along a path by the slow brown river. Laughing, we leapt over puddles of last night’s rain, now drying rapidly in the warmth of the early spring day. At last, out of breath, we stopped and I rested my back against the shiny trunk of a cherry tree as Leigh stood in front of me breathing hard and grinning fit to crack his face in two.
A short pause and he took my hand again and we walked this time, the thrill of his touch suffusing me with a new pleasure. Through the crowds we went, oblivious of their numbers as we laughed at everything and nothing on our way to the shop.
It was the biggest building I had ever been in and would have been intimidating without Leigh. He led me to a corner where huge black and white pictures of young women in underwear hung from the ceiling and covered the walls.
Before this, I had seen only the inside of Mrs Greenhough’s shop in the village. She kept a small stock of ladies’ pants and tights discreetly in a corner, piled on a shelf with the woolly hats and walking socks. Anyone not looking for the items themselves would not recognize them from their plain packaging.
Here, in this enormous store, however, young women clad only in the clothing within, brazenly displayed the contents of each pack. I understood where Abby bought her revealing underwear; though I could see nothing quite as scandalous as some of the items she took off for Leigh when he was photographing her. Leigh, of course, was completely at home and not in the least embarrassed.
I took my lead from him as he matter-of-factly walked up to a woman in the shop uniform and asked her to measure me. He whispered something to her and she gave me a peculiar look but nodded at Leigh’s comment and led me to a curtained cubicle. There, I removed the clothes she said I must if I wanted the right size and subjected myself to her tape measure. She was very polite as she gave me my sizes and left me to dress.
Leigh was waiting outside as I emerged. ‘I wouldn’t normally enquire, but since I’m supposed to be helping, you’ll have to reveal your statistics to me.’
I told him what the woman had said and he nodded approvingly as if I had passed some sort of test.
‘You’re sure that’s what she said?’
I nodded.
‘Positive?’
‘Yes. Why?’
‘Shame. I was hoping to measure you myself, just to make sure. Though, tell the truth, that’s exactly what I would’ve guessed.’
His smile was so mischievous I had to laugh. I began to understand why women found him so attractive. ‘You’re a very wicked man, Leighton Longshaw.’
‘I know, terrible isn’t it? Right. You’d be fine without a bra but I doubt you’d feel at ease. So, we’re not looking for support. Do you want pretty-pretty or a smoother, softer line?’
After some searching, we found some that I liked and Leigh felt would suit me. He sent me to the cubicle to try them on, warning me to leave my own knickers on when I tried the new ones. Just a curtain between the world and me. I felt so vulnerable.
‘Will you stay just outside, please, Leigh?’
‘I’ll come in and hold the curtain closed.’
‘You will not! Oh, you wicked man.’ I had to laugh and he was good, making me feel less exposed by standing outside with his back to the curtain.
‘They feel wonderful. It seems a shame you’ll never get to see your present.’
He stopped himself from speaking and propelled me back to the spot we had found them. ‘As long as they’re comfortable.’
He chose three sets of bras in different colours, so that I had a dozen in total, and two pairs of knickers to match each, plus spares in white.
‘Will I need as many as that?’
He gave me a look that Ma would call old fashioned. ‘It’s usual for a lady to wear a fresh pair each day.’
It was as if he had caught me doing something not very nice and I felt a need to explain. ‘If it’s about cleanliness, I do wash them every evening ready for the next day.’
Leigh’s face settled on sympathy. He reached toward me and I knew he wanted to embrace me, to comfort me as though I was sad or distressed but we were in a public place and I stretched out my hand instead. He squeezed it tenderly. ‘Oh, Faith, what has that bastard done to you?’
It was not until we were at the counter, paying, that I realized he had meant Father. I should have been annoyed, but Leigh’s very real concern for me contrasted so strongly with Father’s indifference and harshness that I found myself again questioning which man was right.
Leigh held the carrier bag open for me. ‘I’ve paid for this lot so you can put some of it on whilst you select your outer clothes. Now, question is, do you want to select something from here…?’
‘You’re going to buy me something else? All this is more than I expected when you said...’
‘I’m not having you walk round York in your underwear, young lady, no matter how much you may wish to.’ He said it loudly enough and in just the right tone to make some of those waiting to pay look shocked and make me laugh when I should have been cross with him. I felt so happy and unrestrained by his company that I had to join in. ‘Okay, I’ll not bother to wear the underwear, then.’
One old woman looked even more shocked, the others just laughed. Leigh seemed as delighted as he was surprised.
‘Come on, Miss Precocious, let’s get out of here before we’re arrested.’
Outside the shop entrance he stopped. ‘Now look what you’ve done! I’ve brought you out here when you might want to stay in there to make your next choice.’
‘What else were you planning to buy me, Leigh?’
‘No arguments?’
‘I promised, and I keep my promises.’
‘Okay. I want to get you something for work, something casual for occasions like this and something special for the evening. How does that sound?’
He was so excited and eager I did not have the heart to tell him I never went anywhere for the evening. ‘It sounds expensive and far too generous.’ His determined look re-appeared. ‘And wonderful, Leigh.’
‘Excellent. M and S is best for the work stuff. Shall we go back in?’
Between us, we found a lovely lilac trouser suit with flared bottoms and a deep purple blouse to go under the jacket so I could wear it undone. In great trepidation, and with Leigh standing guard as before, I put on my new underwear. It felt wonderful after the old woman’s bra and school gym knickers and I walked out to display my trouser suit to Leigh feeling proud and liberated.
‘Lovely. You look really lovely, Faith. I hope you’ll let me see whether you’ve got legs when it comes to the other stuff.’
‘You’re disappointed.’
‘I’m a man. Your choice is perfect for the office. You look great.’
I kept the suit on for our visit to three fashion shops but I left the last one wearing my very first mini skirt, much against my better judgement and largely as a way of thanking Leigh. Black polyester displayed half the length of my thighs and flared softly in the wind so that I felt almost naked. Sheer tights sheathed my legs from waist to new, heeled shoes in black patent leather. My top was caressed by a natural linen blouse that would have exposed my breasts if not for the soft new bra I wore.
‘Fabulous. You shouldn’t hide pins like those. God, but you’re a pretty woman, Faith.’
Leigh’s admiration was wonderful and I felt confident in my sudden attractiveness, knowing I found favour in his expert eyes. But he really boosted my confidence when he asked if he could photograph me. As the object of his lens, I must be good to look at.
‘Amazing. You’re a different and very lovely woman, Faith.’
‘Thank you, Leigh. But I’m the same woman, just in different wrappings. Are you happy to be seen with me like this?’ I knew the answer but I wanted to hear him say it. And I realized, with that knowledge, how fundamentally I had changed in those few short hours.
‘Happy? I was pleased to be with you before, Faith. Now, I’m proud and delighted and smug at the jealous looks from the other men.’
‘I never knew clothes could make so much difference. I always thought they were superficial. But I actually feel different, more confident, and that means other people look at me in a new way. And I like it. I feel wonderful.’
‘You look wonderful. I knew there was a beautiful woman in there trying to get out.’
We were back at the car park. We were more or less alone. I kissed his cheek and he held my arms and kissed my lips very softly for a short eternity.
‘Thank you, Leigh. Thank you for the clothes, for the feeling of self-esteem you’ve brought me.’ And for the kiss on the mouth that I wanted him to repeat.
He shook his head as if puzzled and put the bags of clothes, including my dress for the evening, in the car. I took his hand and he bowed his head at me in a gesture I took to be thanks as he led me once more from the car park.
This time we sauntered down winding, narrow streets thronged with people. It was one of those days that sometimes fall at the end of March; bright and warm after the winter chill, clear and clean and a pleasure to walk through. It was the first of many unseasonably warm days in that year of the long hot summer.
I had expected the initial thrill that had passed from his hand to mine to fade as we walked but it remained, spreading through me, suffusing my whole being with a sensation both pleasurable and disturbing in its intensity.
‘Where are we going?’
‘Up to you. I thought museum, art gallery or the Minster?’
‘The Minster; a thirteenth century cathedral church. Father says it’s an abomination. Where is it? I’d like to see such a building.’
Leigh pointed ahead. There, looming over the whole of the street and higher than any building I had ever seen, was a colossal edifice that could only be some sort of church. It was massive and ornately carved with twin towers and a huge door. Father described it as the haunt of the Devil; a gaudy house to tempt men’s souls away from contemplation, built by the rich and powerful as a show of their wealth and influence. ‘Nothing to do with God.’ He had said.
But I stood awestruck by the majesty of the building. It seemed to me to be a statement made by humble men glorying in the wonder of their God, a suitable place to give praise and thanks.
‘Impressive, isn’t it?’ Though Leigh seemed less than impressed.
I nodded.
‘Showy and ornate and precious little to do with God, of course, but then, what building has anything to do with God? They’re all just opportunities for men to display their power or skill or wealth. Doesn’t detract from its beauty and magnificence, though.’
I was amazed to hear Leigh echo Father’s sentiments. It seemed inconceivable that the two men could have a single thought in common. That they should find agreement in a religious matter of all things completely dumbfounded me. I had to see the interior for myself after such denunciation.
Sunlight cast great rainbows of brilliance on the floor and rows of wooden seats, streaming down in slanting shafts from the stained glass windows. I thought of Leigh’s studio and smiled at the memory.
‘Penny for them?’
‘Similarities of atmosphere but such contrasts of purpose.’ I let him work that out and went to sit at the end of a row of vacant seats so that I could absorb the atmosphere. It was the first time I sat in a mini skirt and I understood at once why women wore tights with them. But my concern over possible breaches of modesty was short lived.
I stared at the walls, the great ceiling arching overhead, the vast spaces between the massive pillars and wondered how such a place could exist. And, for me, Leigh and Father were both wrong about the building’s association with God.
People were milling about all over but they were quiet and kept their voices low, as if awed by the colossal nature of the place; the whole building was filled with undulating background murmuring.
And then I gained a small piece of paradise.
Just as Leigh sat beside me and opened his mouth to ask for an explanation of my enigmatic comment, the huge building filled with musical sound.
I was still absorbing the concept of music, never having heard it at the cottage and only rarely encountering it at the Dairy. The radio was constantly on in the kitchen at Longhouse, so I was growing accustomed to the wide variety of tunes and songs available through that magic box and getting to know and enjoy quite a lot of them. Ma loved her Cliff Richard and The Beatles and even one or two of the most modern groups. Leigh seemed to like almost any sort of music. But nothing had prepared me for the sound that now assailed my senses.
All the quiet chatter and whispering stopped as someone began to play the organ. Leigh pointed out the array of pipes and quickly explained where the instrument was located as the organist played an apparently random series of notes. Silence fell for no more than a couple of seconds and one or two people began to move and talk again. Then the organ began a piece of music I shall never forget. Everyone fell still again.
It began with slow, soft, gentle forays into affection and regard; light, joyful and promising. Gradually it built in scope, volume and complexity until the whole magnificent house of God filled with crescendos of love and joy and exultation, culminating in a climax of pure wonder and spiritual ecstasy. I felt lifted and thrilled, a spiritual wholeness enveloped me and I felt at one with the music and its power of celebration and worship in a way I had never experienced before. The music sighed softly and tenderly back into silence. And the quiet that followed was, for a few precious seconds, absolute.
I squeezed Leigh’s hand in mine, barely daring to look into his face in case it should reveal the same emotions I felt, or in case it should not. When I did look at him, I knew he felt exactly like me. It was a moment I wanted to last forever.
But many missed the point and there was a buzz of reaction before they continued their sight-seeing, as if it had been merely a pleasant interlude.
We sat, souls entwined, for as long as they allowed but the mood was gone and we were forced back to Earth again.
‘What was that?’
‘Nimrod, from Elgar’s Enigma Variations, but played in a way I’ve never experienced before. It’s actually a secular piece but there was more than a touch of worship in that rendition. Brilliant. Extraordinary. Incredibly moving.’
It always surprised me that Leigh knew about so many things. ‘After that, Leigh, the rest of this church can only disappoint me. Can we go back outside, away from the idle chatter?’
He did not object or question me but understood exactly what I felt.
In the bright sunshine, we stood amongst cherry trees in a small paved area and stared up at the mighty walls. Leigh unslung his camera and took more photographs of me. I smiled but he shook his head so I tried to recapture the mood of the music and he nodded his approval.
He returned for my hand. ‘Hungry?’
I was.
‘Food.’
We walked hand in hand from that wonder, carrying the memory inside us, and, making for the river, started the mundane but exciting search for lunch.
